Getting Started with SEO

Posted February 1, 2018 by Unlimited

Search engine optimisation can seem a little daunting at first, in this blog post we will be taking you through some of the steps you can take to start improving the page ranking of your site.

Setup Google Analytics and Web Master Tools

If you have not done already, these two free to use services allow you track the traffic to your site, and can warn you of issues with your site that may be harming your page ranking. Another free tool from Google is the page speed insights tool. You can use this to check the speed of your site and also see if there are any issues with viewing your site on mobile. You could aslo look into setting up Bing Web Tools for more information.

Keyword research

Using Google Analytics you can see what search terms people are entering to find your site. You can then optimise your sites content to feature these keywords prominently, and increase traffic to your site. Good quality copy can result in a major improvement in visits to your site, think of what you would be using as a search term to find your site, and write your content accordingly. Beware of keyword stuffing however, try and use variations on your chosen keywords.

Domain name

This can be a little tricky, as you want a domain name that is relevant to your business, but you should be careful to avoid the exact domain match penalty. This a penalty that Google apples to domain names that are exactly the same as the keyword you are going after. So, for example, a domain like “manchestertaxis.co.uk” will be penalised for the search term “Manchester taxis”.

Page Urls

Make sure your page urls use the full title of your page. WordPress is set by default to show the page number, you can easily change this in the settings to show the full page title in the url instead. This means that Google can see the keywords in the url, instead of a meaningless number, for example yourdomain/taxis-in-stockport instead of yourdomain/post-252.

Reviews and testimonials

Reviews and testimonials are invaluable for increasing traffic to your site. Not only do they signal to potential customers the quality of your business, when you use services such as TrustPilot and ReviewCentre it gives your site a high quality back link from a trusted source. Back links improve the reputation of your site, the more good quality back links you have the better the page ranking Google will give you for your keywords.
